Dug Down Deep: Unearthing What I Believe and Why It Matters by Joshua Harris
Still the Best Hope by Dennis Prager
The Escondido Theology by John Frame
Happiness is a Serious Problem by Dennis Prager
Institutes of the Christian Religion by John Calvin
We just bought ‘Do Hard Things’ for all the graduates (along with John Pipers ‘Don’t Waste Your Life’).
The Harris brother’s also sent us 3 cases of their book because it is our desire to put it into the hands of every high schooler here in town. They really seem to be an awesome family.
Camille,
Both of those bokks are fantastic! Karen and I read Piper’s book about two years ago, and were definitely challenged by it.
It doesn’t surprise me at all that Alex and Brett would do something like that – that’s the kind of young men they are.
May the high-schoolers read it, take it to heart, and do hard things for the glory of God. It’ll be a good challenge.
I didn’t say it in an earlier reposnse, but I like your website.
For His Glory,
Larry
I just finished “Prayer” by Ole Hallesby. It has renewed my prayer life- I think you would enjoy it.
GH,
I’ll have to pick it up. Maybe it’ll make one of my “5 Good Book” lists. Thank you for the recommendation.
Larry
OK, I’m sure I’d like and agree with the book by DeYoung, but question: WHY “pray”? We all agree, prayer *must* be good, but HOW does that help discover God’s will??? In the book, is it practical, or just pious platitude? I mean, how can you write a book and NOT say to pray??! You know I agree with the “way of wisdom,” but “drink deeply of God’s word,” and “pray” seems to me like pious soup. WHAT do I pray? HOW should I pray (attitude, or specific, or what)? Lots of times, I think sermon-givers and book-writers just toss in “and pray,” because it is the thing we are supposed to say. So, does DeYoung go beyond the common pap in this area??
Larry,
We are reading “Doctrine” What Christians should believe. By Mark Driscoll and Gerry Breshears. This is a very good book and it really brings it home on understanding what we believe.
