On this day, October 31st, in 1517, Martin Luther nailed a document he had written to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. Within two weeks, that document–95 items for discussion in the Roman Catholic Church–had been copied and had spread all over Europe. The Reformation had begun!
The message of the Reformers can be summed up in one packed sentence: Scripture alone reveals that we are saved by grace alone through faith alone because of Christ alone. Those biblical truths, which had been lost, obscured, or hidden, were rediscovered.
The Reformation has taken place, and we praise God for it, but the church must always be reforming. We celebrate what God did through faithful men and women in the 16th and 17th centuries, but we also look forward to what He will do in continuing His work of reformation.
Happy Reformation Day!
