Is it possible to take the God’s grace for granted? Yes, sadly, it is. We get used to it, and as the saying goes, “familiarity breeds contempt.” Sinclair Ferguson, senior pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Columbia, South Carolina, is well aware of our tendency and wanted to do something about it. As a result he wrote By Grace Alone: How the Grace of God Amazes Me. The book is built around a hymn written by an African pastor from Burundi named Emmanuel T. Sibomana called “O How the Grace of God Amazes Me.”
There are no new “discoveries” in this book, which is what makes it so good. Ferguson gives us a straight-forward account of the effects of God’s unmerited favor upon us. Each chapter will cause you to praise God and be amazed at His grace, and simply yawn because you’ve heard it all so many times before. Read and enjoy!
